Can you add water to non-aqueous coatings?

Well, we know that the question sounds weird at first, but yes! With the appropriate technology, it is possible to add water to the non-aqueous systems without compromising on any properties like gloss, adhesion, coverage, etc.

Remember, we are not talking about the conventional emulsifiers, that stabilize water in oil systems, it’s something different!

    Technology

Nowadays, pollution issues and environmental concerns are at the center point to deliver sustainable solutions, and the coatings industry is no different. Notable attention is given to reducing the emissions of VOCs (volatile organic compounds). While many of the applications are being replaced with VOC-free aqueous systems, many of them are still solvent-based due to the limitation of other systems to provide similar properties and aesthetic appeal. Thus, efforts are being made in reducing the volatile matter, and adding water/ partially replacing solvents is a unique way to achieve so.

Our products that deliver such solutions are based on metal complex that induces partial compatibility of of water in solvent-borne coating systems. They are usually recommended for high-gloss alkyd emulsion systems. Not only they reduce the volatile matter, they also improve other coating properties such as adhesion and leveling. Our products play an important role in a step towards sustainable development, while simultaneously reducing volatile emissions

    Our Products

    Additive PMA-100

    Description
    Advantages

Additive PMA-100 is a specially designed additive for wood primer and red-oxide primer applications. It is a unique and useful formulation tool for water-in-oil emulsion coating primers. It is a multifunctional organometallic-based additive that improves processing benefits for water-in-oil emulsions.

    • Innovative additive for water addition in oil-based coatings.
    • It is not conventional ethoxylated emulsifier chemistry, it is organometallic-based advanced chemistry which gives numerous advantages in processing and applications.

    Additive - 107

    Description
    Advantages

Additive 107 is a specialty additive designed for water addition in alkyd-based enamel paints. It is based on organometallic compounds, which provide a number of benefits over conventional ethoxylated emulsifiers by significantly improving wetting, leveling, ability of cratering & adhesion promotion. It is a unique product for water-in-oil emulsion coating systems.

    • Additive 107 allows up to 30% of the post-water addition without affecting adhesion, whereas conventional emulsifiers degrade the adhesion of the system post-water addition due to a shift towards lesser alkyd solids percentage.
    • It provides inter-coat adhesion along with the ability to wet out systems with lower surface energy.
    • Improves surface leveling along with gloss by reducing orange peel & reduces the incidence of Bernard cell formation.
    • Prevents intra-particular sticking in the glossy paints to provide better brush ability & consequently, the ability to reduce cratering.

    Additive WAC-777

    Description
    Advantages

Additive WAC-777 is a specially designed product for cost-effective high-performance solvent-borne coatings. This organometallic-based chemical is the monopoly additive for water addition in oil-based paint without any adverse effect on paint properties. Rather, it improves the properties such as film adhesion promotion, improvement in wetting properties, surface leveling, and the ability to reduce cratering.

    • This is the most important advantage of the additive. It provides an additional room for water addition upto over 30% into the enamel paints without affecting adhesion, rather promoting adhesion.
    • The additive provides inter-coat adhesion along with the ability to wet out low surface energy.
    • It improves surface leveling along with enhancement in gloss and reduces orange peel or incidence of bernard cell formation.
    • Glossy paints have tendency to stick themselves, which can be blocked by excellent anti-blocking properties of this additive. Additionally, it also provides better brushability and ability to reduce catering.

To deliver sustainable solutions that enhance the performance and aesthetics of the paints and coatings for different applications, enabling our customers to be a step ahead of the competitors and develop a benchmark in upcoming technologies for paints and coatings.
